The Sustainable Tourism Observatory of South Tyrol
Tourism is one of the most important economic and social phenomena at a global level, undoubtedly a strategic driver of regional development. However, the growing awareness about tourism-related impacts and the acceptance of sustainable development principles entail a new form of destination management: a data-driven, long-term approach for tourism regions.
This is why South Tyrol is part of the UN Tourism International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories – INSTO, a network of observatories monitoring sustainability at destination level.
There are only seven INSTO observatories in Europe – one of them located in South Tyrol, in the heart of the Italian Alps at the Center for Advanced Studies of Eurac Research. The initiative is based on the long-standing commitment to the sustainable and resilient growth of the sector through measurement and monitoring, supporting the evidence-based management of tourism.
