Greta Erschbamer & Anna Scuttari Global INSTO Meeting 2018

South Tyrol becomes part of the global network

Eurac Research’s Center for Advanced Studies joined the annual meeting of the World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories – INSTO from 22nd to 23rd October 2018 in Madrid.

The meeting focused on sharing experiences of measuring and monitoring the impact tourism has on destinations, and exploring the opportunities provided to tourism by innovation in location services.

As part of the meeting, South Tyrol was officially accepted in the network of tourism observatories of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This happened after researchers from Eurac Research, together with experts from IDM South Tyrol and the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano, paved the way for an observatory after a one-year application phase.

Therefore, South Tyrol is worldwide the 23rd and the fourth in Europe as part of this international network. Further destinations are the Dalmatian coast, the Aegean Islands and the South of Portugal. The task of the observatories is to collect, analyze and compare data and figures on tourism in a systematic and long-term manner. Furthermore, the effects of tourism on the society, the environment and the economy will be analyzed.
